Q. I am interested in pursuing a career in design - do you have any advice for me?         ...continued.... It pays to have creative vision and stamina, lots of patience as you have to deal with clients as well trades people on a daily basis.  Many people think design is more of a hobby than a business and that all you do is shop.  The reality is very different, there is a lot of desk work, lots of running around, carting and coordinating as well as budgeting and time lining.  The hours and deadlines can be also incredibly demanding.

For study, I would investigate all design schools thoroughly and also approach major design houses or companies for possible internships.  It pays if you already know the field you want to work in.  If not, just try a number of avenues until you get a start.  You can always move around once you get going.

Remember also, there are many roles for design.  You could be a Stylist, Interior Designer, Set Designer, Colour Consultant, you could choose colours and materials for the manufacturing industry, or you could even work for a big chain merchandising in-stores.  Design is an exciting field, there are lots of great opportunities but it's also incredibly competitive.  Think about what you would love to do, then pursue it with all your heart and remember to smile often!

And for the record, if I had my time again – I would have trained as a window dresser!

What I do on TV or in magazines may come across as being very easy and fun but the reality there is a ton of organization and behind the scenes work that goes in to make a TV show or printed article – not unlike reality where so much work goes into completing a great room, space or home.

I think design can be learned but many of the best designers are instinctive.  To become good I believe it takes time.  It pays to read, research, create storyboards and really know your own style through and through.  Learn and discover materials, fabrics and building products and also be prepared to get hands on experience so you can understand many facets of a job.

You also have to be adaptable and able to work to someone elses requirements, even if they are not to your style.  This helps you to be commercial.  It also stretches you creatively which I believe is a good thing.
