Vintage Lace Bowl

DIY doily bowl - Tara Dennis

I love this idea, such a lovely and modern way to enjoy Nan's favourite doilies all over again.

Often over looked because protecting furniture with lace is just not fashionable anymore, If you look carefully you can pick them up for a song on-line, at markets and second hand shops.  When you do find them,  study each carefully. Often completely made by hand, you'll be amazed at the beautiful delicate detail.

You will need:

Lace Cloth Doilies
Fabric Stiffener (I used Plaid)

How to:

Ceramic, plastic or metal bowls all work for this, just choose one according to the shape you're after. You can try draping it over a few to see how it's going to look.
1. Elevate your upturned bowl and place something tall like a tin or a jar underneath. That way it can hang freely.
2. Working over newspaper, use a brush to saturate the entire doily with the stiffener. This is important, make sure you get plenty on.
3. Leave it to drip and dry overnight then gently lift it away from the bowl underneath.
Much like a hat, your new bowl will be fairly pliable but will hold it's shape well. Keep it dry and if it's for someone special, present it in a box to prevent from crushing.
